Since 1997 the European Commission has set the institutional framework for dismantling and recycling vehicles in an environmentally friendly way, setting clear and quantified targets for reuse, recycling and recovery of materials. In addition, it obliges vehicle manufacturers to take into account, in the design of new vehicles, their recyclability when they reach the end of their life cycle. In Greece, with the launch of the Alternative Vehicle Management System of Greece (EVMG) in December 2004, the recycling rate is showing an increasing trend. Apart from private owners of old cars, Local Authorities have also become fully active and have contributed to the removal of abandoned old cars from the streets of cities.
